A cheap flight is a promising start to a city break. It becomes less impressive when three nights of accommodation cost more than the flight, the meals and the new suitcase combined.
So where is Airbnb cheapest in Europe? Among the ten city markets compared here, Skopje has the lowest reported average price, followed by Tirana and Sofia. There is also a less obvious entry from France: Grenoble.
The figures come from AirROI's market directory, using its rows marked updated on 30 July 2026. This is a selected comparison of city-break markets, not an exhaustive ranking of every European city or a set of live booking quotes.
The distinction matters. An average mixes different dates, locations and property types. Your two-bedroom flat for a school-holiday weekend may cost something very different.
Ten European city markets compared

|---|---|---|
| Skopje | North Macedonia | $53.04 |
| Tirana | Albania | $61.43 |
| Sofia | Bulgaria | $76.63 |
| Grenoble | France | $80.55 |
| Bucharest | Romania | $84.72 |
| Riga | Latvia | $90.78 |
| Vilnius | Lithuania | $98.00 |
| Budapest | Hungary | $138.09 |
| Lisbon | Portugal | $171.24 |

The cities were chosen to compare lower-priced Balkan, eastern and Baltic markets with some familiar city-break destinations and a French alternative. They are ordered by the reported price within that selection. Cities outside the selection may be cheaper.
A closer look at the cities
Skopje: the lowest figure in this comparison
Skopje gives the search a useful starting point. Its Old Bazaar, Stone Bridge and hilltop fortress offer a city visit built around streets, shops and the river, rather than an itinerary that has to be filled with expensive ticketed attractions. (Visit Macedonia)
For accommodation, begin with the places you expect to spend time. Compare the walk or public-transport route to those places, not just the pin's distance from a broad city-centre label.
A lower market average is an invitation to look, not a reason to stop checking. Read the recent reviews, bathroom arrangement, air conditioning or heating details and arrival process as carefully as you would in a more expensive city.
For a short break, a slightly better-located flat can be worth more than saving a small amount each night and repeatedly travelling back and forth.
Tirana: price the whole journey
Tirana is another lower-priced starting point in the table. Treat it as a candidate for an actual trip comparison, with your departure airport, dates and arrival time entered before deciding that it is the cheapest holiday overall.
The useful calculation includes accommodation, travel to the property and the things you expect to do. A low average accommodation figure cannot tell you what the flights cost from your own city.
Look closely at late-arrival arrangements. If a booking requires an in-person handover, check whether your arrival time is possible and whether any stated charge applies. It is much easier to resolve that before purchasing a flight landing late in the evening.
Hosts can help by describing the arrival process clearly. Guests choosing a budget trip still need a dependable way through the front door.
Sofia: a capital-city option worth checking
Sofia's Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is an obvious point around which to orient a first visit, with the city's tourism service providing information on the cathedral and the wider city. (Visit Sofia)
When comparing stays, look at the route between your accommodation and the areas you want to explore. “Near transport” is useful only once you know which service, where it goes and how it fits your itinerary.
Then check the ordinary details: a private or shared bathroom, the floor, lift access, sleeping arrangements and the kitchen equipment you will actually use.
Saving money by cooking a few meals only works if the kitchen supports those meals. A kettle and mini-fridge can be perfectly adequate for one trip and a poor fit for another. The listing should make that distinction clear.
Grenoble: the comparison is not just east versus west
Grenoble is the French entry in this selection. Its official tourism material combines a city visit with the surrounding mountain setting, which gives guests a different reason to look beyond the most obvious capital-city destinations. (Grenoble Alpes Tourism)
Keep the accommodation geography straight. A flat in Grenoble and a stay in a mountain resort are not the same product, even if both appear in a search inspired by the Alps.
If you intend to go hiking, sightseeing or further into the mountains, price and plan those journeys separately. A low accommodation total can be undermined by an itinerary that assumes every activity is nearby.
For property managers, that is a useful lesson about local notes. Describe the real route and the kind of day trip involved, rather than allowing a scenic regional name to do all the explaining.
Bucharest, Riga and Vilnius: compare the actual neighbourhood
These three capitals sit in the lower half of the price range shown here. They make sensible additions to a shortlist if the aim is to compare several city breaks on the same budget.
There is little value, however, in treating each city as one uniform accommodation market. For your actual search, choose the same number of guests and a comparable area, then look at a small group of properties that meet your needs.
Do not compare a private room in one city with a large central apartment in another and call the difference a destination saving. The product has changed as well as the place.
For a couple, a studio may work beautifully. For friends travelling together, a second proper bedroom may be worth more than a fashionable address. Decide that before looking at the cheapest result, because the first low price can set an unhelpful expectation for everything that follows.
Budapest, Lisbon and Prague: useful reference points
These better-known city-break choices sit in the higher price bracket of our selection. Their presence helps put the lower figures in context, but it does not mean every stay there is expensive or poor value.
An individual booking may still work out well because the location cuts transport costs, a kitchen replaces several restaurant meals or the layout suits a group sharing the bill.
The reverse is also possible. A cheap nightly figure can be less attractive once cleaning, platform charges and taxes appear in the full total. Airbnb explains that a home's price can contain several components alongside its nightly charge. (Airbnb pricing help)
Compare the checkout total for the same length of stay. That is the number your trip budget actually needs to accommodate.
Why a three-night total can change the order
Consider two fictional listings for the same three-night trip:
| Illustrative listing | Nightly charge | Cleaning charge | Subtotal before other fees and taxes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apartment A | £65 | £90 | £285 |
| Apartment B | £85 | £20 | £275 |
Apartment A looks cheaper when you only read the nightly figure. Apartment B has the lower subtotal for this particular stay. Add the actual service fees, taxes and selected extras to compare the final amount.
These are worked examples, not quotes from the cities above. Their purpose is to show why a fixed cleaning charge can have a large effect on a short booking.
Repeat the exercise for seven nights and the balance changes again. The cost of accommodation depends on the length of the visit as well as the nightly rate.
How to make a fair comparison for your own dates
Use one small search brief across all the destinations on your shortlist:
- The same check-in and checkout dates.
- The actual number of adults and children.
- The same room type and minimum number of bedrooms.
- Similar location requirements and an acceptable travel time.
- The facilities you need, such as a kitchen, lift or workspace.
- Comparable cancellation terms.
Save the full booking totals for three or four suitable properties in each city. A handful of realistic options tells you more about your trip than the single lowest number visible in a broad search.
Record the search date too. Availability changes, and a cheap property that has since been booked cannot support a later comparison.
For a flexible trip, repeat the search across a second set of dates. Moving the visit may make a larger difference than changing the destination, but that needs checking against actual availability rather than assuming every midweek stay will be cheaper.
What “cheap” should still include
A budget stay can be small and simple. It still needs to match its description.
Guests should understand how to arrive, where they will sleep, what is shared and whom to contact if there is a problem. An accurate photo of a modest kitchen is more useful than a grand description that conceals the lack of a hob.
The same applies to communication. Clear access details, heating instructions and checkout notes cost little to write and make a practical difference to the visit.
If you manage a property, avoid treating a low rate as a reason to leave these questions unanswered. Good information is part of the stay at every price level. Our guide to luxury touches on a small budget focuses on the small improvements guests can actually use.
Start with the data, then price the trip
The comparison makes Skopje, Tirana and Sofia useful starting points, and shows why a less obvious destination such as Grenoble can deserve a place on the shortlist. It does not establish a permanent winner for every traveller and every date.
