Booking a castle on Airbnb can mean several quite different things. You might get an entire stone tower, a private apartment in a family home or a bedroom grand enough to make your own bedroom seem a little apologetic.
That distinction is the first thing to check. A photograph of a castle does not necessarily mean the drawbridge, dining hall and every room behind the windows belong to your booking.
These ten castle Airbnbs offer a mix of whole properties, suites and apartments across Europe. Some have medieval origins. One is a Victorian folly. All have a more interesting silhouette than the average holiday flat, with individual listing links so you can check exactly what is included.
Choose the kind of castle stay you want
| Stay | Location | Accommodation to check |
|---|---|---|
| Neidpath Castle | Scottish Borders | A private chamber and suite |
| Thornton Castle | Aberdeenshire | A private wing in a family castle |
| Fanningstown Castle | County Limerick, Ireland | A whole castle holiday home |
| Carraigin Castle | County Galway, Ireland | A lakeside hall-house |
| Drummond Tower | County Louth, Ireland | A self-contained Victorian tower |
| Castello Macchiaroli | Teggiano, Italy | A suite within the castle |
| Schloss Bamenohl | Finnentrop, Germany | A first-floor apartment |
| Château de la Cineraye | Vay, France | A studio within the château |
| Château de Froidcour | Stoumont, Belgium | A tower apartment |
| Torre de Oto | Aragón, Spain | A historic tower holiday home |
This is a curated collection, not a price ranking. Rates, minimum stays and available facilities need checking for your dates. The stairs, unfortunately, tend to be less flexible.
Ten castle stays
1. Neidpath Castle, Scottish Borders

Image: Neidpath Castle on Airbnb.
The Mary Queen of Scots chamber at Neidpath comes with an antique four-poster bed, a roll-top bath and an open fire. The host offers private exploration of the castle before guests retire to their own suite. The overnight accommodation is the chamber and associated rooms, rather than bedrooms throughout the whole building. (Airbnb)
The practical details make this easier to picture. There is a small kitchenette with a fridge and kettle, and provisions for a continental breakfast. Dinner is something to arrange separately, subject to the private chef's availability.
The chamber is on the second floor with no lift. That matters when choosing a stay for anyone who finds stairs difficult, and when deciding whether to bring a small bag or the suitcase normally reserved for a fortnight abroad.
2. Thornton Castle, Aberdeenshire

Image: Thornton Castle on Airbnb.
Thornton Castle offers a private wing within a castle that remains a family home. The guest accommodation runs over two floors, with a spiral staircase contributing both to the atmosphere and to the route between rooms. (Airbnb)
Breakfast is included in the listing, while the room facilities include a fridge and tea-making equipment. Do not assume that a private wing comes with a full self-catering kitchen. Other activities and spaces should be checked with the hosts rather than treated as automatically exclusive.
This is the option for someone who likes the idea of staying in a lived-in historic house. The shared setting is part of its character. It also makes a clear explanation of private areas, shared areas and meal arrangements particularly useful before arrival.
3. Fanningstown Castle, Ireland

Image: Fanningstown Castle on Airbnb.
Fanningstown Castle near Adare is a restored castle holiday home with five bedrooms, set among the countryside and dairy farms of County Limerick. It offers a larger-group version of the castle idea, with the accommodation booked as a whole property. (Airbnb)
For a group, the interesting comparison is not simply the total number of beds. Look at the bathroom arrangements, dining space and how everyone will use the house together. A generous bedroom count does not remove the need to plan breakfast.
If the building suggests a wedding, celebration or event, ask about that separately. Permission to book overnight accommodation is not automatically permission to bring additional visitors or stage an event. A castle can make a very appealing setting without every possible use being included in its ordinary rate.
4. Carraigin Castle, Ireland

Image: Carraigin Castle on Airbnb.
Carraigin Castle near Headford is a 13th-century hall-house beside Lough Corrib, with stone interiors, a great hall and grounds extending to approximately seven acres. The building's scale and setting make it one of the more substantial stays in this selection. (Airbnb)
Its historic layout deserves more attention than a quick glance at capacity. Some lower rooms interconnect, the kitchen is comparatively small, and the host describes an upper bedroom as seasonal accommodation.
Before booking for several households, work out who would sleep where and which facilities would be shared. Historic houses are rarely designed around the modern expectation that every couple gets an identical bedroom and bathroom. For the right group that is part of the character, but it is much easier to agree on room allocation before arriving.
5. Drummond Tower, Ireland

Image: Drummond Tower on Airbnb.
Drummond Tower near Drogheda looks suitably defensive, but it is a Victorian folly built in 1858 rather than a medieval fortress. The self-contained accommodation is arranged vertically, with kitchen, living and sleeping areas on different levels and a roof terrace above. (Airbnb)
The listing describes 43 steps across the tower. That is a more useful number to keep in mind than the amount of decorative stonework in the first picture.
This stay makes sense for guests who want the tower itself to be the experience. The host says the tower is unsuitable for small children unless agreed following a special request. Its 43 steps also require careful consideration for anyone who has difficulty walking or using stairs. Going upstairs for a forgotten jumper is a rather different operation when the whole holiday home is arranged like a very handsome staircase.
6. Castello Macchiaroli, Italy

Image: La Romantica at Castello Macchiaroli on Airbnb.
La Romantica at Castello Macchiaroli is a suite within the castle in Teggiano. The listing describes approximately 65 square metres, a private entrance and a living space with a fireplace and sofa bed. This is a way to stay inside a castle while keeping the booking on the scale of an apartment. (Airbnb)
Its facilities include a coffee maker and small fridge, rather than a full kitchen. Access also involves steps. Those details are useful if your plans include cooking every night or avoiding changes of level.
The surrounding town is part of the appeal. You can choose a historic setting without needing an entire rural estate, a large group and a timetable for feeding everyone in a banqueting hall.
7. Schloss Bamenohl, Germany

Image: Schloss Bamenohl on Airbnb.
Schloss Bamenohl in Finnentrop offers a first-floor apartment within a family-occupied castle. The approximately 70-square-metre space includes a fireplace, park views and a small kitchen with an induction hob and microwave. (Airbnb)
It is another example where the useful word is “within”. The castle setting belongs to the experience, but the booking is an apartment with its own defined facilities.
Check the sofa-bed dimensions if using the additional sleeping space, and read the current access information. A property can comfortably suit a couple while needing a more careful look for a larger party. That does not diminish the attraction of a fireplace in a castle; it makes the expectations around it clearer.
8. Château de la Cineraye, France

Image: Château de la Cineraye on Airbnb.
At Château de la Cineraye in Vay, the guest accommodation is a first-floor studio within a family château. The listing includes a kitchenette and access to a setting of parkland and woods, with the village approximately a kilometre away. (Airbnb)
A visit around the château can be discussed with the hosts. That should be treated as an arrangement to confirm, rather than an assumption that every room is open whenever you fancy exploring.
The studio format makes the scale manageable. You get the atmosphere of the building and its grounds without needing to fill a dozen bedrooms. For anyone comparing château stays, that can be the difference between a realistic weekend booking and a magnificent property that only makes sense for a reunion.
9. Château de Froidcour, Belgium

Image: The Falcon's Nest at Château de Froidcour on Airbnb.
The Falcon's Nest sits at the top of the highest tower of Château de Froidcour, above the Amblève valley near Stoumont. The château remains a family residence, with the tower accommodation offered as a small retreat. (Airbnb)
The host describes wildlife around the tower and valley, including seasonal bird activity. Think of that as part of a natural setting, rather than a guaranteed wildlife performance at a particular hour.
The high position supplies the appeal and a reason to check access carefully. Before booking, ask for the current stair and luggage arrangements if those will affect your stay. “Top of the tower” is a wonderful phrase to read at a desk; it becomes a more physical proposition with a heavy bag.
10. Torre de Oto, Spain

Image: Torre de Oto on Airbnb.
Torre de Oto is a 15th-century tower in the Aragonese Pyrenees, near Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. The listing pairs its historic setting with access to the surrounding area's outdoor activities. (Airbnb)
That makes it a different proposition from a castle chosen mainly for a fireside weekend. It can be a base for days outside, with the building providing the memorable return at the end of the afternoon.
Plan the activities separately and check the actual route to the places you want to visit. Being near a national park does not mean every trailhead is on the doorstep, or that equipment and guided activities are included in an accommodation booking.
The five questions worth asking before booking
Start with exactly what the reservation includes. Whole castle, private wing, suite and studio are all appealing options, but they are not interchangeable.
Then check:
- Access: stairs, lifts, walking routes and where you can unload luggage.
- Sleeping arrangements: private bedrooms, interconnecting rooms and sofa beds.
- Meals: a full kitchen, kitchenette, breakfast service or restaurants nearby.
- Shared space: grounds, corridors, tours and areas used by the owners.
- Permissions and extras: visitors, events, pets, catering and optional services.
A good host will make these distinctions easy to understand. A historic building can be wonderfully individual; the booking information should be straightforward.
A castle still needs clear instructions
The most memorable feature may be the tower, but the first message can still be about parking. Guests need to know which entrance to use, how to find their rooms and whom to contact when something does not work.
That is where careful property notes earn their place. letbloom helps guests get answers on WhatsApp from those notes, with urgent or unusual issues passed to the team. See how it works if your property has a distinctive layout and a familiar stream of repeated questions.
